He surprised me.
What started with a mysterious card left in my car one early July Friday, ended with me lying on Silver Strand Beach in San Diego with my best friend.
His love for me overflowing the cup that is always at its brim.
There is sacrifice in love, but this was different. This was an extra measure. When your best friend lives over a thousand miles away, sacrifice is needed in order to spend time together in any other format than technology.
So with iced coffees and snacks, art journals and ecstatic hearts we made our way to the beach. Radio turned up loud, singing and dancing in the car. Stopping for photos with a green Brontosaurs at a gas station in Gila Bend, AZ. Hashtagging our way from Phoenix and back again.
We watched as the sun took its final breath over the Pacific before diving into the depths of the waves. We shared soul secrets & poetry in a small bookstore; and took our art journals to the beach and baptized them with salted water.
It was 1996 – the last trip I took with girlfriends. It’s always hard to leave the one you whose ring you wear, but a weekend escape with your best girlfriend is good for your soul. Especially when you haven’t seen each other in 11 months.
To sit on the edge of the world brushed up against her and still allowing space for the other to breathe and listen to the #secretmessages being told in the spray of waves meeting cliffs. To be in the moment. And whisper in each others ears that we need to do this every year.
…..and we do.
